What is it?

The Seychelles is an archipelago of 115 islands scattered across the Indian Ocean, roughly 1,000 miles off the east coast of Africa. It is one of the smallest countries in the world by population, and that fact alone tells you a lot about what kind of experience it delivers. There are no mega-resorts, no cruise ship ports, and no all-inclusive party scene. What it has instead is extraordinary natural beauty, near-total seclusion, and some of the most thoughtfully designed luxury resorts anywhere on earth.

What "remote" actually means before you pack your bags

The Seychelles is not the kind of remote that sounds romantic but is secretly easy to reach. It requires a real commitment in travel time, and we think honesty up front saves a lot of frustration later.

From the US, you are looking at two long-haul flights, typically connecting through Doha, Dubai, or Paris before landing on Mahé. That is roughly 20 to 24 hours of travel each way. You will clear customs on Mahé, and then, depending on which island your resort is on, you may take a short domestic flight, a ferry, or a private boat transfer. Some ultra-private resorts require a speedboat or helicopter.

Because of the travel investment involved, we strongly recommend staying at least 10 nights. Going for a week technically works but feels rushed when you factor in arrival recovery. You want to actually arrive, not just visit.

If you have seen Mahé and Praslin, the real adventure begins. The outer islands, such as North Island, Fregate, or Denis, are where exclusivity tips into something extraordinary. Most host fewer than 20 villas at a time, and resort style varies widely: some are built around conservation and nature immersion, others around pure indulgence with butler service and over-water villas. A few are genuinely both. That conversation is one we love having before we make any recommendations.

On the activity side, diving and snorkeling around Aldabra Atoll is world-class, fly fishing the outer atolls is bucket-list for anglers, and some of our clients do almost nothing active at all. That is its own kind of perfection.

Choosing your island:

Mahé: Gateway island

Capital city, Victoria. Best for arrival nights, day hikes, and the National Botanical Gardens. Not your final destination, but a worthy layover.

Praslin: Classic choice

Anse Lazio, consistently ranked among the world's best beaches. Great resort options across all budgets. Short flight or fast ferry from Mahé.

La Digue: Slow & dreamy

No traffic. Bicycles and ox carts. The iconic pink granite boulders at Anse Source d'Argent. Smaller resort inventory, but deeply special.

North Island: Ultra-exclusive

11 villas total. Private marine reserve. Conservation-focused luxury at its most refined. One of the most private resort experiences anywhere on earth.

Fregate Island: Private island

Seychelles FAQs

What is the best time of year to visit?

The Seychelles is a year-round destination, which is one of its great strengths. The calmest seas and best diving conditions fall between April and May, and again in October and November. The trade wind season from June through August brings choppier water on some islands but is still very pleasant overall. December through March is warm and lush but carries some rain.

How much should we budget?

The Seychelles sits firmly in the luxury tier. Mid-range resort options start around $600 to $900 per night, and the private outer islands regularly run $2,000 to $5,000 per night for a villa. That said, many resorts are all-inclusive or include meals, which changes the math considerably.

Do we need a visa?

US passport holders do not need a visa in advance. You will receive a visitor's permit on arrival, valid for up to 30 days and renewable in-country. Just make sure your passport has at least six months of validity remaining from your travel dates.

Is this a good destination for families or is it really just couples?

It is genuinely wonderful for both. Some resorts are designed with romance exclusively in mind and do not welcome children under 12. Others are beautifully set up for families, with marine biology programs, snorkeling for kids, and activities built around the natural environment.
