The Best Ways to Pair London and Paris

When people begin dreaming about a European trip, two cities come up again and again: London and Paris.

They are close enough to combine easily, yet different enough that each feels like its own world. London leans historic and literary with royal landmarks and grand museums. Paris is artistic, elegant, and deeply tied to food, fashion, and café culture.

Together they create one of the most classic city pairings in travel.

We often recommend a 7 to 10 night trip that splits time between the two. The Eurostar train connects them in about two hours, making it simple to move between cities without losing a full day of travel.

Read on for how we usually approach this pairing, whether it is your first visit or a return trip.

The Iconic City Pairing: London + Paris

These two cities complement each other beautifully. London offers depth of history, incredible museums, and a diverse dining scene. Paris brings romance, art, and the pleasure of simply wandering beautiful neighborhoods.

London

The question we hear most often is: How should we divide the time?

For a 7 night trip, we usually recommend 4 nights in London and 3 nights in Paris. London is geographically larger and many of the major sights are more spread out.

For a 9 or 10 night trip, 5 nights in London and 4 to 5 nights in Paris creates a more relaxed pace and leaves space for a day trip from one of the cities.

The Eurostar train makes the transition easy. You leave from central London and arrive in central Paris, which means you spend far less time dealing with airports and security lines.

First Timers: Choosing the Right Neighborhood

Where you stay has a big impact on how these cities feel.

London

Covent Garden, London

Many first time visitors enjoy neighborhoods like Covent Garden, Mayfair, or Westminster. These areas place you close to many of the classic sights such as Buckingham Palace, the Thames, and several major museums. They are also lively in the evenings with restaurants and theater nearby.

Paris

Saint Germain area on the Left Bank

For a first visit, the Saint Germain area on the Left Bank is often a wonderful fit. It feels distinctly Parisian with cafés, small shops, and easy walks to the Seine and the Louvre.

The Right Bank near the Opera or the Tuileries is another strong option if you prefer to be close to major museums and shopping.

The goal on a first trip is simple: stay somewhere central so you can walk, wander, and get a feel for each city without spending too much time in taxis.

Return Visitors: Refining the Experience

Once you have seen the highlights, these cities open up in a whole new way.

The Cotswolds

In London, return visitors often enjoy deeper cultural experiences such as private or early access museum visits, guided walks through historic neighborhoods, or a day trip to places like Oxford, Windsor, or the Cotswolds.

Versailles Palace Gardens

In Paris, the focus often shifts toward food and smaller cultural experiences. This might mean reserving sought after restaurants in advance, arranging a private guide through the Louvre or Musée d’Orsay, or taking a day trip to Champagne or Versailles.

Repeat travelers also tend to explore neighborhoods they missed the first time. Areas like Notting Hill in London or Le Marais in Paris can add a completely different feel to the trip.

London and Paris FAQs

How many nights do we really need for both cities? Seven nights is the minimum we recommend. Ten nights is even better if you want a relaxed pace.

Is the Eurostar the best way to travel between the cities? Yes. It is fast, comfortable, and far more convenient than flying.

Should we start in London or Paris? Most travelers from the U.S. begin in London because flights tend to arrive earlier in the day. But either direction works well.

Is this trip good for first time visitors to Europe? Absolutely. Both cities are easy to navigate, full of culture and history, and well connected by train.

Can we add day trips? Yes, and they are often a highlight. From London you might consider Windsor or Oxford. From Paris, Versailles or the Champagne region are popular options.

If London and Paris are on your travel wish list, send us a message and tell us how you like to travel. We can help you decide how long to stay in each city and design the trip so it fits your pace and interests.

A thoughtfully planned London and Paris trip is one you will remember for years.
