My Personal Travel Philosophy, Or, “Who Uses Travel Agents, Anyway?”
I get this particular question a lot at happy hour.
Most people think the internet makes it easier than ever to jet to a new destination – but sometimes, having all that information at your fingertips gets confusing. What’s a good deal? What isn’t? Is there a weird detail I should know about my hotel that isn’t in the online reviews? (Like the fact that we have to bring our own towels?)
Whenever I hear that question – what do travel agents even do now? – it usually gets me talking about why travel can be so meaningful!
So I thought I’d tell you a little bit about what travel means to me, and also remind you that my profession did not go out of style in the 1980s with giant shoulder pads.
My philosophy: don’t just travel. Travel better.
What does that mean? It means that if you’re spending two weeks in Europe, I want to help you spend that two weeks in the best way possible! These are the types of vacations you take once or twice in a lifetime, especially when you’re close to retirement. I don’t want you spending even a minute of that precious time wishing you’d booked a closer hotel or gone to a restaurant that wasn’t so touristy.
I want you to have a pro looking out for you, even when you’re far away from home. My job is to make sure you don’t miss a great opportunity. That’s why I’m so invested in making sure you’re booking the experiences that are right for you.
If you love food, let me help you find the most authentic restaurants, with experienced chefs who barely speak English but cook like a world-rated professional. If you love French wine, let’s get you to a winery near Avignon so you can crush grapes under your feet, then go drink a Côtes du Rhônes in the sunshine! If you want to sit on the deck of your cruise ship and read while the rest of the family goes sightseeing, I can make that happen, too!
When you work with me, you’ll enjoy the kinds of experiences you can’t get through an internet deal. I cut through all the junk and the fine print so you can make an informed choice about how and where to spend your money. That way, everybody gets the vacation they want, while cherishing time spent with loved ones.
In short: I’m a travel advisor, and I’m your professional vacation ambassador. When you work with me, I make sure you get the experience of a lifetime.
